I have had my Roomba now for about a month, and he…. ooops, *it* is wonderful! I have an open plan kitchen, living room and dining room, and the battery will run long enough to clean the entire area if the clutter is picked up. Leaving items on the floor, like a laundry basket or some shoes, will require the Roomba to do extra work cleaning around the item, and then the battery sometimes poops out before finishing the space. Sooooo….. suddenly the family is picking up things off the floor! Our Roomba has carpet, hard wood, and slate tile to contend with and all look great. Roomba will just roll from one to the other with no issues. Twice my Roomba has gone under the (saggy) couch and gotten stuck, but every other time (this would be at least three times per day for a month – Roomba goes over the same spots again and again) it just does its work under there and comes right back out. I did decide to block under the couch yesterday since it doesn’t really need to be vacuumed daily and I don’t want the Roomba to get stuck while I am out of the house. Upstairs Roomba cleans two small bedrooms and a master bedroom and two bathrooms on one charge.

I have had no trouble with Roomba on throw rugs or my thin welcome mats, but Roomba gets choked on my floppy rag rug in my kitchen and one thick, rubber based bathroom rug. The other bathroom rug I have is medium thickness and Roomba handles those fine. You do want to keep the cords away or block them off. The virtual walls with this 440 work great but we have barely used them after the first few times… they are on batteries and it just seemed like a waste to use the batteries when you could just set down a basket or plastic bin to block Roomba from “protected areas”.
The spot cleaner works great, especially if you made a “spot” mess… like dumped out a purse on the floor or someone tracked a dry crumbling leaf. Roomba cleans just that area and you don’t have to lug out the big vacuum for this touch-up.

I have been incredibly impressed with the power in this vacuum and I tell everyone about him… oops, I mean “it” again. Seriously, he has become like a little robot member of the family, and he does more housework than the rest of us. Next time I will research one with a docking station, but for now we have had no trouble finding the Roomba and taking it back to the charger each day. Usually now he finishes the room (as opposed to the battery running out while Roomba was still cleaning which meant it could be anywhere in the room) and stops in the middle with a little fanfare beep.

So far it has changed our cleaning habits – one, our house is vacuumed more often, and two, we keep things tidier so Roomba can vacuum. I am very happy with my purchase.

“Neato have built the XV11 robotic vacuum cleaner perhaps in attempt to knock Roomba off the top spot. The Neato XV11 appears to be a serious challenger to the Roomba range of robots and has a number of significant improvements that could see it do very well.

The Neato XV11 works slightly different when cleaning a room by using what appears to be a more methodical approach. When compared to the Roomba that uses a spiralling pattern along with a system which allows the Roomba to bounce of objects and appears to randomly cover the carpet, the XV11 maps along the walls of the room to know how big the room is. Rooms are typically broken down in to 15′ x 15′ and if power gets low mid clean, the XV11 goes back to it’s base to recharge and then carries on where it left off. Another difference between the two vacuums is that the Roomba uses virtual walls and the XV11 uses laser to detect doorways and wont leave a room unless it is told to do so. The system used on the XV11 is called SLAM which means simultaneous localization and mapping. SLAM has lasers on the top that detect objects 360 degrees around it. With that data pathfinding can be done as well as obstacle avoidance.

Other features are as what can be expected such as edge detection to prevent it falling down the stairs as well as support for other types of floors like laminate etc… Scheduling is also built in allowing you to program the time of day when you want the vacuum to automatically start.

Other things to note with the Neato XV11 is that it runs a lot louder than the Roomba which Neato have said is down to using a more powerful vacuum inside of it. Also, you’ll notice that the front of the vacuum has corners rather than being round like the roomba. This gives the vacuum the ability to get right in to corners when needed. The main advantage of Neato robot vacuum cleaner is that it can clean in corners because of it shape.

I’ve been a Roomba user for almost two years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:

1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery
2. Difficult to clean
3. Noisy
4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.

1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.

iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new feature of the new Roomba, the little vacuum automatically finds his docking station when his battery is about dead. I do have two recommendations on this note, however. The docking station appears to work just like a virtual wall, Roomba doesn’t know that it is there unless it crosses its path, so you make sure that it is in a wide open room where Roomba is sure to cross its path in its waning minutes of power. Secondly, now you have to be extra sure to Roomba-proof the room so that he doesn’t get stuck. If he’s stuck he won’t be able to find his way back to the charger.

2. The new version has gotten much easier to clean, especially the main brush. All the pieces now pop in and out of place easier and there are no screws to remove any of the pieces that need cleaning. This has proven to be a huge benefit.

3. The Discovery is noticeably quieter than the older versions, especially on tile surfaces.

4. The new line of Roomba Floorvacs comes with sensors that can detect dirt. That was the first thing we tested when we got our Discovery. I had pieces of Styrofoam broken into small pieces and it detected it and automatically performed a spot clean on that area. Then I put him in the kitchen where I had accidentally dumped a bag of cereal on the floor and then managed to step on it…Roomba focused on that area and cleaned up every little crumb.

I love my Roomba. I 100% recommend that you get one. [...] I bought mine at a local store in the mall and had to return my Pro Elite version 4 times before I finally got one that wasn’t buggy. Then, under the warrantee, after my fourth one went on the fritz I was able to upgrade to the Discovery for free. So far after 2 weeks, the Discovery has been bug-free.

Nevertheless, because of the many issues that I have had in the past, and as with any new and emerging technology, buy it where you can purchase an extended warrantee and easily return defective devices.

Notwithstanding, buy a Roomba. Even though my wife and I never have time to clean our floors have been spotless for the last two years.

Description

Roomba is a disc about 13 cm in diameter and less than 4 cm in size. It has a large contact sensing bumper is mounted on the front half of the device with an infrared sensor on top speed in the middle. It also has to deal with a carrying handle on top. If you are considering buying a Scooba robotic floor cleaner from iRobot in the next few days, it may take a little longer than you expect for the product to be delivered.

All models of the Scooba are sold out on iRobot’s website. One of the company’s most popular models, the Scooba 350, has been out of stock for nearly two months.

“This is an inventory issue,” says Charles Vaida, a spokesperson for iRobot in a statement.”It doesn’t have to do with any changes in the manufacturing process or a restructuring of our Scooba line.”

Currently iRobot’s website, a major sales channel for the company, is offering a three to four weeks timeline for the Scoobas to ship. However, major online retailers such as Amazon.com and Bed, Bath &
Beyond have products available immediately.

The stock out on iRobot’s website is the result of unexpectedly high sales in the last few months, claims iRobot.

Till recently iRobot had been offering special prices for the Scooba on the Home Shopping Network. For instance, it made the Scooba 340 and the robotic vacuum Roomba 535 model available for $400 compared to the regular price of $650.

The HSN special sold out, says Vaida, and iRobot is working to replenish its stock of units.

The good news for potential buyers is that iRobot says it will be fully stocked for the holiday season
