Vacuum Groom Your Pet
Posted on November 13th, 2009 No commentsWhile some owners vacuum after their beloved pets, how about vacuuming your pet? Some animals are outright scared at the noise of vacuum cleaners, resulting in many YouTube videos of dog vs. vacuum cleaners. However, with careful planning and some tips, you can train your pet to be less afraid of it. All vacuum cleaners produce a considerable amount of noise, and although some are quieter than others, it may still scare the paws off your pet! Here are a few surefire ways to get your pet less scared of your vacuum, and maybe more willing to accept a quick grooming:
Introduce
Introduce your pet to the vacuum while it’s stationary and turned off. Run the brushes through their coat and let them get familiar with the feeling of a vacuum.Peaceful Environment
Turn on the vacuum only when the environment around them is peaceful. Vacuum on those quiet afternoons so that your pets will expect that noise from habit.Reward
Reward your pet before turning on the vacuum. This can serve as a distraction, and make sure to reward good behavior.Habit
Habits are essential in training a pet to perform a certain behavior, or at least tolerate things around them. Make it a daily habit to turn on your vacuum for several minutes. Estimate how long you would take to groom your pet, and leave the vacuum on for that same amount of time. You may even vacuum clean your floor while you’re at it, but make sure your pet is within some range to witness it.Young Pets
As with many other “tricks”, pets who are taught and given the opportunity to be exposed to certain things should be at a young age. If your pet is beyond their years to learn a new trick, remember that some deaf cats have taken a liking to vacuum cleaners. Noise is the only deterrent in vacuum cleaners for animals, so let them get acquainted with it early!Humane Treatment
Remember, do not “attack” your pet with the hoses and the loud vacuum cleaner. Let them come to the vacuum cleaner on its own terms. To help speed up that process, please take the tips above as well as consider having your pet within the general vicinity of the vacuum. Sometimes, removing “hiding spots” can eliminate their fear once they feel that the vacuum does not harm them. -
