This vacuum cleaner sucks. There I said it, now that that’s out of the way let’s get down to the nitty gritty the down and dirty. For the past five years or so I’ve only been using bag less vacuums. I have three. A Eureka upright, a Panasonic small canister and a DustBuster. Bag less vacuums are a breed unto themselves. You get to save the cost of the bags but you have to figure out how to empty them without making a bigger mess than you just cleaned up. You have to supply a bag of some sort so you can contain the dirt and dispose of it neatly. With a bag vacuum like the MC-CG885 that’s not a problem. What IS a problem is the bag inside is quite small and very costly. As Amazon doesn’t sell it (yet??) I found it on the Internet for about $6 per bag. For a bag as small as it is, that could be quite an expensive proposition to maintain. My first thought is if you have new carpet, they usually shed for quite a while (my bag less upright pulled up a lot of blue fuzz) and you’ll fill these bags very quickly. Going back to my first sentence, this “OptiFlow” has a lot of suction power. That’s good it pulled up dirt like nobody’s business.

To begin back at the beginning, assembling this vacuum was relatively easy. The hose attaches to the body with an easy twist and the wands also go together with positive latching mechanisms that are quite secure. Just make sure you connect the outboard power line so the beater bar and light get their power. It’s a simple, one way is right, positive connection. When it’s all together I noticed a few issues. There is a hook on the body to support the wand and head in an upright position for storage or rest. It sometimes tips over. If the head is set to anything other than extra low it always tips over. It won’t park as easily as an upright. It on the other hand isn’t as heavy as a typical upright. It’s fairly maneuverable too. It has three free spinning casters on its bottom and they roll easily on carpet or floor. I have both. The power cord is VERY long so you can plug it in and clean a large area or maybe two rooms. It retracts easily with the press of the large button on the top of the canister. Under the “hood” it has hidden storage for the crevice tool and small brush. Both work as expected. The business end of the hose has a pistol type grip and sliding on off switch. This is where you can attach the tools or by disconnecting the head end power cord you can use one of the rods for an extended reach. The power switch is an Off, Floor, Carpet three position switch. It also controls the beater bar on the head piece. It operates smoothly and efficiently.

I experimented with different heights for the head end. At its lowest setting it has a tendency to want to pull you forward, It’s very strong and digs into the carpet. As I raised it that corrected the situation and still got the cleaning done. Just be careful to get the right height setting. As for cleaning a floor, not so good. Light or loose dust is fine but for heavier grime you’ll need something better for that. It’s not a mop.

Changing the bag is easy and neat. It rests in a basket that has a handle to lift it out of the body. It’s all under the big hood that opens easily. That the bag is small and expensive is the biggest most damning strike on this otherwise fine vacuum. It is also relatively quiet for one that is as powerful as it is. I would love to see Panasonic come up with an emptyable cartridge that would go where the bag is, but that’s not going to happen.

To sum up. It’s strong, quiet, easy to use and does a very good job. I just can’t get over the fact that you will be running up serious expenses on bags.

UPDATE: March 14: I would raise the Star level to 4 now that Amazon is selling the bags and at a reasonable price (4 for $10). It ends my biggest gripe.

The suction is excellent for pet hair and the fact that the head is flush with the floor makes it very maneuverable so that it can easily get under low set chairs and other furniture pieces.

A potential downside of this model is that it is heavy compared to other models and the filter can take a bit of time to clean.  It would be a stretch to say that a good vacuum can make vacuuming fun, but this Panasonic model has made vacuuming as close to fun as it can get.

The MC-V7720 is a well-built, powerful vacuum that sucks in a good way. In fact, it is so powerful, it pulled up more dirt and fibers from my carpet than another vacuum I used that cost three times as much. Though be cautioned of its power — using this vacuum on small rugs can cause an edge or corner of the rug to get pulled into the vacuum. This can turn a new rug into an old rug pretty quickly.

While the vacuum can be overpowering at times, it has three separate power levels, which can be set manually by the push of a button. I highly recommend the low setting for small rugs since even the medium setting is pretty powerful. But if you are just vacuuming rooms or hallways, use the “Power on Demand” option. This feature automatically adjusts the power of the vacuum depending on how much suction is needed. For example, on a hardwood floor that is pretty clean, the suction may drop to a low power setting. Once the vacuum starts pulling up some debris, it will automatically jump to a medium setting. If there is an excessive amount of dirt, the power will change to a high or ultra-high setting, which makes sure to clean whatever dirt is on ground. The Power on Demand system is surprisingly accurate and changes immediately when needed. It helps conserve power and is even a bit fun to play around with. Of course, if you want a steady level of power, you can always use one of the manual settings.

The Panasonic MC-V7720 also includes the QuickDraw 2 accessories, which are multiple suction ends you can attach to the hose. My favorite is the air turbine, which acts as a mini vacuum on the end of the hose and does a great job of cleaning small, hard-to-reach areas. However, don’t use the air turbine on delicate surfaces, such as varnished tables, or you might leave some noticeable streaks. The QuickDraw 2 accessories all attach to the vacuum for easy access and the hose detaches from the main tube, which makes switching to an accessory quick and easy. I guess that’s why they call it “QuickDraw.” My only complaint is that the long, thin QuickDraw tool does not sit flush with the vacuum and can wiggle around. Fortunately, it is not noticeable when vacuuming, but it was a surprising oversight in an otherwise well-built vacuum.

Another plus of the MC-V7720 is that it just looks cool. My mom made the comment that it looks like a spaceship, which I guess is kind of true. The grey and silver combination isn’t especially exciting, but it creates a bold look which fits the vacuum well. The wide base of the vacuum allows for efficient cleaning of large areas, and it does a good job of sucking along the edges. A light right above the base helps illuminate the area you are vacuuming, which is great for darker areas. The vacuum also folds down until it almost touches the floor, making it possible to get under those short coffee tables and nightstands. An level on the left side of the base allows you to switch between carpet and floor settings, which allows for more efficient suction. Better yet, once you start vacuuming a carpeted area, the vacuum automatically adjusts the height of the roller depending on the length of the carpet.

Since this Panasonic is a bagless vacuum, the debris compartment and filter must be cleaned manually. The good news is that the compartment snaps off easily and takes only a moment to empty in a trash can. The bad news is you have to get your hands dirty and cleaning the filter requires a good minute of banging it on a solid surface. I highly recommend you clean the filter outside unless you want to vacuum again once you’re done. While vacuuming is not an activity most people would find enjoyable, the MC-V7720 makes the job as painless as possible. Its powerful, efficient suction and ease-of-use make this vacuum a great choice.
