A specially-equipped Roomba robot vacuum cleaner can now sense human emotional states. University of Calgary researchers published their results in a paper titled “Using Bio-electrical Signals to Influence the Social Behaviours of Domesticated Robots.”

Using a special headband to capture bioelectric signals from the forehead of a human user, the system collects this data and then infers stress from muscle tension readings. Their control software reinterprets natural muscle tension as estimating the user’s stress level; the more muscle tension, the more stress is inferred.

“Two distinct robotic behaviours corresponding to two extreme emotional states, either relaxed or stressed, are triggered when the stress reading reach a threshold. Robot actions are then influenced by these stress readings. When a person shows high stress (~levels 3 & 4), the robot enters its cleaning mode but moves away from the user so as not annoy them. When a person is relaxed (~level 1), the robot (if cleaning) approaches the person and then stops, simulating a pet sitting next to its owner. If the reading is in between these two levels, the robot continues operating in its current mode until the stress reading reaches a threshold.”

The unique feature of this system is that the robot’s behavior is controlled by human emotion rather than by some sort of explicit commands. There have been other attempts to give robots or computers some ability to sense human emotions. In one study, it was found that nanny robots could sense the emotions of autistic children. Another project — the Sensitive Artificial Listener (SAL) — tried to detect the verbal cues provided by emotional humans.

My kids are growing up with real robots in the house, from Dad’s UAVs to Roomba. And being 21st Century natives, they think nothing of it–of course the vacuum cleaner is autonomous.

But I thought our first Roomba was a revelation: it was cheap, cool and remarkably effective, although not quite as the designers intended. Roomba got the playroom clean not with its own tepid sucking power but because we told the kids that if they didn’t pick up their Lego, “Roomba will eat it”. Over time, however, Roomba got too feeble for regular use and my wife got tired up vacuuming around it (ironic!), and so it was sent to live under the laundry room sink.

Then, last month, iRobot sent over a pre-release version of the new Roomba 560, and we had to pull out the battered older version for a proper head-to-head test. Plenty of other people have already written about the new Roomba’s features, including its stronger vacuum and better sensors. But we wanted to test it for what we actually use it for: Lego jousting. Placing a minifig on a Roombas and watching how long they can stay on as the bot bounces off walls is great fun, and with two Roombas we could compete against more than the clock. A game of rock-paper-scissors decided who was going to get the new Roomba, and as you can see from the princess-on-a-pony figure at right, one of the girls won.

We expected the new Roomba would win the jousting match, because its sensors see approaching walls and slow the bot down for a soft bounce, which tends not to dislodge the Lego figures. But in fact the old Roomba won, two rounds to one. Why? It turns out that front impact doesn’t dislodge the figures, because both Roombas have a depression in the front that the minifigs got lodged in. It’s side impact that sends the minifigs flying, since there’s nothing to stop their slides. Side impact comes from Roomba-on-Roomba collisions. And there the old Roomba, which doesn’t slow down before hitting things, has the advantage as a battering ram.

Oh, and the <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/carpet-cleaning/"title="carpet cleaning" >carpets? Never been cleaner!

BTW, the new Roomba does seem to do a better job of vacuuming, although it’s still no Dyson. But we had the same problem with it that we had with the earlier one: due to our sofas being exactly the wrong height, the Roombas tend to get wedged under them and shut down. We’ve yet to have one finish a run and trundle back to its charger without help.

But as it happened I was at iRobot (Roomba’s maker) in Boston last week, and they encouraged me to try a little mod. My kids and I drilled holes on each side of the bumper and put a screw in, sticking out by about a half-inch, as shown. This worked perfectly, and now when the Roomba is moving along the side of the sofa, the screws keep it from sidling under and getting stuck. (If our sofas were more scratch prone, we might use something softer than a screw). Here’s the mod

If any company groks the importance of the hacker user base, it’s iRobot, makers of the Roomba. Sure, most home owners just want to keep their <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/floor"title="floor" >floors clean, but when iRobot realized that people were buying its vacuum cleaner robots for hobby projects, it embraced the modders and sales rocketed. There’s even a Home Robot Forum on the official site.

So the “improved cleaning performance” and anti-allergen filtering of the new 500 series might be interesting to you clean-freaks out there, but what gets us excited is the new modular design, making upgrades and component swap-outs easy, and the Wireless Command Center, which – among other things – allows direct remote control: Tell the kids to clean their rooms and now they might just do it.

The Roomba 560 (pictured) also gains “Virtual Wall Lighthouses”, programmable virtual walls which can confine the robot to one room until it is fully cleaned. This works by RF communication, so we assume it orients itself in relation to the base station. Prices range from $250 to $400, and there are all sorts of video demos on the product site.

Early versions of the iRobot
Warrior X700 “are slated to be ready by the second half of next year,” according to Army Times’ Kris Osborn. And unlike previous offerings from iRobot — which tended to be on the light, bordering-on-flimsy side — the Warrior will weigh up to 250 pounds. It’ll be able to lug a 500-pound payload, and carry 150 pounds with a newly muscular arm. Which will mean the machine is more than buff enough to pack heat.
“We’re looking at urban warfare… It can be deploying weapons systems. It can be doing re-supply operations, taking ammo or water to troops who are pinned down, perimeter security and building clearing,” Helen Greiner, iRobot chairman and co-founder, tells Army Times

Could street-cleaners someday be replaced by robots? Olga Kalugina thinks so, and has designed the Scarab, an oversized, outdoor Roomba, to do it.

The Scarab would first be deployed in shopping malls where it could easily cruise, clean and polish the smooth <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/floor"title="floor" >floors, but we see a day when robots scour the sidewalks for trash and keep our streets sparkling clean.

Looking like a giant vacuum cleaner, the Scarab uses a pair of webcams to seek out mess and then <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/brush"title="brush" >brushes the trash into an internal tank, which it can empty by itself. It also has a grabber-arm to pick up larger items — discarded Slurpee cups, for example, and runs on electricity instead of an engine like many manually operated street-sweepers.

The big problem, though, is that while a Roomba is safe inside your house, Kalugina’s concept design would be out amongst ranks of terrifying teenagers, bent on teasing the poor machine or even just kicking its face in. Stick this out into the real mean city streets and you’d lose the entire fleet in days, stolen and repurposed or just sold. No, a real street-smart robot would need some kind of defense. A taser, perhaps, or at the very least an electrified shell.

And there you have it. The perfect street cleaning robot would in fact be R2D2. We welcome the future

We also heart the woman behind them, Helen Greiner, chairman and one of the co-founders of iRobot.

In an interview with Reader’s Digest, Greiner isn’t ready to call herself a geek. But she has some powerhouse credentials. Greiner has a degree in mechanical engineering and computer science from MIT.

She says she fell in love with Robots when she was 11 and saw Star Wars and R2D2. Her personal Roomba is called “Arnie, after the Terminator.”

Greiner says robots can help take care of “dull, dirty, dangerous jobs.” Among the ideas for new robots is the Warrior that can carry 150 pounds, climb stairs and do a four-minute mile. Also a robotic helper for Grandma and Grandpa.

After trying out a Roomba (the low level robot hoover) a few months ago I’ve been on the look out for other cleaning solutions to tickle my “Dad about home” gadget needs.

In a break from my game reviews this week I stumbled acorss the Electrolux Unirapido. Having long been a fan of the <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/dust/"title="dust" >Dustbuster mini-hoover idea, the sound of a chordless upright version sounded great to me.

It wasn’t in the house but a few minutes though and my wife’s ears pricked up and she came in to see what the strange vacuuming noise was. To cut a long story short, she loved it and now three friends have one too.

She writes the odd family game reivew, so I thought I’d get her to write her thoughts on the pro’s and con’s of the Unirapido for you
Here we have a [vacuum] that not only looks great but makes cleaning easier – meaning more time for games. The Electrolux Unirapido is a really nifty little vacuum cleaner, much more than just glorified dust buster. It is really good looking too in hot pink and white. The real joy is that it is cordless meaning you can just grab it deal with a small mess or do a more thorough room clean. The charge lasts long enough to do one level of my house (3 bedrooms bathroom and landing) which is pretty impressive for a dust buster! It’s really light an easy to manoeuvre and the small head means its great for getting into tight corners.

There are different speed settings as well and I found the lower settings fine for de-crumbing the laminate <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/floor"title="floor" >flooring in the dining room, this helped to make the power last for longer too. <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/carpet-cleaning/"title="carpet cleaning" >Carpets needed a faster setting, but the little rotating <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/brush"title="brush" >brushes did a great job picking up pet hairs.

The only negatives are that it’s small size does mean that a large expanse of carpet does feel a bit overwhelming and means a lot of pushing backwards and forwards and tall people may find it a bit short for them.

The charging station is really small and unobtrusive and the vacuum is very easy to empty: nice clicky button on the front and the dust chamber pops out and can be emptied straight into the bin.

I personally love it and would definitely invest in one for my house. I rarely get the time to get the large vacuum out and do the whole house which is always frustrating and I hate messy carpets. This little thing means I can just grab it and clean here and there as I need to, which means I have more of that nice clean carpet feeling more of the time. In fact I’ve realised that it will also be brilliant for cleaning the inside of the car as well!

The robot vacuum cleaner goes squarely up against iRobot’s Roomba, with 15 sensors and a set of cameras which it uses to build a map of the world around it. It also remembers where it has been, so it won’t bounce around aimlessly, cleaning the same spot over and over.

The Hoover will be released this month in Korea, but as far as we care, it can stay there. If you can’t hack it , we’re not interested.
