The Roomba 440 Cordless Robot vacuums so you don’t have to. Just press the clean button and Roomba does the rest. Its powerful vacuum and counter-rotating <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/brush"title="brush" >brushes reach deep into your <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/carpet-cleaning/"title="carpet cleaning" >carpet to remove dirt, <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/dust/"title="dust" >dust and pet hair. Virtual walls tell it where to clean by restricting off-limit areas, and it automatically senses and avoids stairs and drop offs, so it cleans the whole <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/floor"title="floor" >floor, under and around furniture and along walls. Unit automatically adjusts to vacuum carpets and hard floors, and senses dirtier areas that need more thorough cleaning. Spot mode quickly cleans up spills and concentrated messes.

Detects dirty areas and stays cleaning until the dirt is gone

Measures 5 H x 17 W x 16 D.

Requires 4 x C batteries (not included)

Customer Review
I have had my Roomba now for about a month, and he…. ooops, *it* is wonderful! I have an open plan kitchen, living room and dining room, and the battery will run long enough to clean the entire area if the clutter is picked up. Leaving items on the floor, like a laundry basket or some shoes, will require the Roomba to do extra work cleaning around the item, and then the battery sometimes poops out before finishing the space. Sooooo….. suddenly the family is picking up things off the floor! Our Roomba has carpet, hard wood, and slate tile to contend with and all look great. Roomba will just roll from one to the other with no issues. Twice my Roomba has gone under the (saggy) couch and gotten stuck, but every other time (this would be at least three times per day for a month – Roomba goes over the same spots again and again) it just does its work under there and comes right back out. I did decide to block under the couch yesterday since it doesn’t really need to be vacuumed daily and I don’t want the Roomba to get stuck while I am out of the house. Upstairs Roomba cleans two small bedrooms and a master bedroom and two bathrooms on one charge.

I have had no trouble with Roomba on throw rugs or my thin welcome mats, but Roomba gets choked on my floppy rag rug in my kitchen and one thick, rubber based bathroom rug. The other bathroom rug I have is medium thickness and Roomba handles those fine. You do want to keep the cords away or block them off. The virtual walls with this 440 work great but we have barely used them after the first few times… they are on batteries and it just seemed like a waste to use the batteries when you could just set down a basket or plastic bin to block Roomba from “protected areas”.
The spot cleaner works great, especially if you made a “spot” mess… like dumped out a purse on the floor or someone tracked a dry crumbling leaf. Roomba cleans just that area and you don’t have to lug out the big vacuum for this touch-up.

I have been incredibly impressed with the power in this vacuum and I tell everyone about him… oops, I mean “it” again. Seriously, he has become like a little robot member of the family, and he does more housework than the rest of us. Next time I will research one with a docking station, but for now we have had no trouble finding the Roomba and taking it back to the charger each day. Usually now he finishes the room (as opposed to the battery running out while Roomba was still cleaning which meant it could be anywhere in the room) and stops in the middle with a little fanfare beep.

So far it has changed our cleaning habits – one, our house is vacuumed more often, and two, we keep things tidier so Roomba can vacuum. I am very happy with my purchase.

Description

Roomba is a disc about 13 cm in diameter and less than 4 cm in size. It has a large contact sensing bumper is mounted on the front half of the device with an infrared sensor on top speed in the middle. It also has to deal with a carrying handle on top. Depending on the model chosen, the strain with one or two infrared emitter units.

First and second generation model required knowledge of the size of the room before cleaning. This was done through three small buttons and is no longer necessary with newer models.

The device operates with internal nickel metal hydride batteries to recharge and require a regular power outlet. Newer units have a base that can automatically detect and switch to the need for recharging.

With a newer generation Roomba is as simple as starting the implementation, to find it, press the power button and then pressing either clean, spot, or max needs.

If the pure, local, or max pressed, the device starts pause a moment and then work. The contact bumper to push the device detects objects and the virtual walls of the device on the surface to be cleaned border. There are four additional infrared sensors on the underside of the device prevents it from falling down stairs or rails.

Unlike the Electrolux models, this device does not show which is for cleaning. Rather than rely on objects or walls meet the card room. This design is based on technology, the MIT robot be equipped, such as insects and matched with simple control over their surroundings.

After a short time Roomba starts to “sing”. If the office is discovered, it will try to return to her. If it just happens to remove <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/dust/"title="dust" >dust from the back of the bin and emptied the unit.

This device is not designed for deep <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/carpet-cleaning/"title="carpet cleaning" >carpet. It is not an object, it is small enough to travel to get the same beds, sofas and other furniture. If the device detects that it has captured, it is to “sing” no more meaning earth beneath him, but stops and starts, until someone comes to find it.

Those who are tired of vacuuming and no more trouble, you find Roomba a great investment. It allows the owner to sit back and relax or wash and do things while not all vacuum automatically. There is nothing easier than to go with a Roomba because it will simplify things as never before.

A specially-equipped Roomba robot vacuum cleaner can now sense human emotional states. University of Calgary researchers published their results in a paper titled “Using Bio-electrical Signals to Influence the Social Behaviours of Domesticated Robots.”

Using a special headband to capture bioelectric signals from the forehead of a human user, the system collects this data and then infers stress from muscle tension readings. Their control software reinterprets natural muscle tension as estimating the user’s stress level; the more muscle tension, the more stress is inferred.

“Two distinct robotic behaviours corresponding to two extreme emotional states, either relaxed or stressed, are triggered when the stress reading reach a threshold. Robot actions are then influenced by these stress readings. When a person shows high stress (~levels 3 & 4), the robot enters its cleaning mode but moves away from the user so as not annoy them. When a person is relaxed (~level 1), the robot (if cleaning) approaches the person and then stops, simulating a pet sitting next to its owner. If the reading is in between these two levels, the robot continues operating in its current mode until the stress reading reaches a threshold.”

The unique feature of this system is that the robot’s behavior is controlled by human emotion rather than by some sort of explicit commands. There have been other attempts to give robots or computers some ability to sense human emotions. In one study, it was found that nanny robots could sense the emotions of autistic children. Another project — the Sensitive Artificial Listener (SAL) — tried to detect the verbal cues provided by emotional humans.

If you are considering buying a Scooba robotic <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/floor"title="floor" >floor cleaner from iRobot in the next few days, it may take a little longer than you expect for the product to be delivered.

All models of the Scooba are sold out on iRobot’s website. One of the company’s most popular models, the Scooba 350, has been out of stock for nearly two months.

“This is an inventory issue,” says Charles Vaida, a spokesperson for iRobot in a statement.”It doesn’t have to do with any changes in the manufacturing process or a restructuring of our Scooba line.”

Currently iRobot’s website, a major sales channel for the company, is offering a three to four weeks timeline for the Scoobas to ship. However, major online retailers such as Amazon.com and Bed, Bath &
Beyond have products available immediately.

The stock out on iRobot’s website is the result of unexpectedly high sales in the last few months, claims iRobot.

Till recently iRobot had been offering special prices for the Scooba on the Home Shopping Network. For instance, it made the Scooba 340 and the robotic vacuum Roomba 535 model available for $400 compared to the regular price of $650.

The HSN special sold out, says Vaida, and iRobot is working to replenish its stock of units.

The good news for potential buyers is that iRobot says it will be fully stocked for the holiday season

My kids are growing up with real robots in the house, from Dad’s UAVs to Roomba. And being 21st Century natives, they think nothing of it–of course the vacuum cleaner is autonomous.

But I thought our first Roomba was a revelation: it was cheap, cool and remarkably effective, although not quite as the designers intended. Roomba got the playroom clean not with its own tepid sucking power but because we told the kids that if they didn’t pick up their Lego, “Roomba will eat it”. Over time, however, Roomba got too feeble for regular use and my wife got tired up vacuuming around it (ironic!), and so it was sent to live under the laundry room sink.

Then, last month, iRobot sent over a pre-release version of the new Roomba 560, and we had to pull out the battered older version for a proper head-to-head test. Plenty of other people have already written about the new Roomba’s features, including its stronger vacuum and better sensors. But we wanted to test it for what we actually use it for: Lego jousting. Placing a minifig on a Roombas and watching how long they can stay on as the bot bounces off walls is great fun, and with two Roombas we could compete against more than the clock. A game of rock-paper-scissors decided who was going to get the new Roomba, and as you can see from the princess-on-a-pony figure at right, one of the girls won.

We expected the new Roomba would win the jousting match, because its sensors see approaching walls and slow the bot down for a soft bounce, which tends not to dislodge the Lego figures. But in fact the old Roomba won, two rounds to one. Why? It turns out that front impact doesn’t dislodge the figures, because both Roombas have a depression in the front that the minifigs got lodged in. It’s side impact that sends the minifigs flying, since there’s nothing to stop their slides. Side impact comes from Roomba-on-Roomba collisions. And there the old Roomba, which doesn’t slow down before hitting things, has the advantage as a battering ram.

Oh, and the <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/carpet-cleaning/"title="carpet cleaning" >carpets? Never been cleaner!

BTW, the new Roomba does seem to do a better job of vacuuming, although it’s still no Dyson. But we had the same problem with it that we had with the earlier one: due to our sofas being exactly the wrong height, the Roombas tend to get wedged under them and shut down. We’ve yet to have one finish a run and trundle back to its charger without help.

But as it happened I was at iRobot (Roomba’s maker) in Boston last week, and they encouraged me to try a little mod. My kids and I drilled holes on each side of the bumper and put a screw in, sticking out by about a half-inch, as shown. This worked perfectly, and now when the Roomba is moving along the side of the sofa, the screws keep it from sidling under and getting stuck. (If our sofas were more scratch prone, we might use something softer than a screw). Here’s the mod

If any company groks the importance of the hacker user base, it’s iRobot, makers of the Roomba. Sure, most home owners just want to keep their <a href="http://www.bestvac.net/tag/floor"title="floor" >floors clean, but when iRobot realized that people were buying its vacuum cleaner robots for hobby projects, it embraced the modders and sales rocketed. There’s even a Home Robot Forum on the official site.

So the “improved cleaning performance” and anti-allergen filtering of the new 500 series might be interesting to you clean-freaks out there, but what gets us excited is the new modular design, making upgrades and component swap-outs easy, and the Wireless Command Center, which – among other things – allows direct remote control: Tell the kids to clean their rooms and now they might just do it.

The Roomba 560 (pictured) also gains “Virtual Wall Lighthouses”, programmable virtual walls which can confine the robot to one room until it is fully cleaned. This works by RF communication, so we assume it orients itself in relation to the base station. Prices range from $250 to $400, and there are all sorts of video demos on the product site.

Early versions of the iRobot
Warrior X700 “are slated to be ready by the second half of next year,” according to Army Times’ Kris Osborn. And unlike previous offerings from iRobot — which tended to be on the light, bordering-on-flimsy side — the Warrior will weigh up to 250 pounds. It’ll be able to lug a 500-pound payload, and carry 150 pounds with a newly muscular arm. Which will mean the machine is more than buff enough to pack heat.
“We’re looking at urban warfare… It can be deploying weapons systems. It can be doing re-supply operations, taking ammo or water to troops who are pinned down, perimeter security and building clearing,” Helen Greiner, iRobot chairman and co-founder, tells Army Times
